History of Tune In To Kids Media Literacy Project

Tune In To Kids has developed in to a year-long media literacy project involving the collaboration of over forty organizations from around Washoe County.  2010 marks the eleventh consecutive year of our efforts to raise awareness about the effects of the quality and quantity of media use on children and families.
We began in 2000 with a handful of organizations planning Tame the TV Week.  By 2004 we had our first Tune In To Kids Fair, and after holding the 2006 Fair at Idlewild Park with an attendance of over 8000, there was an interest to expand the calendar of activities to year around.

From the beginning, the goals of the activities were to raise awareness about the amount of time spent watching TV (and using computers, video games, etc.) and to promote positive alternatives to screen media. Although the name of the project has changed over this period of time, from Tame the TV Week to TV Turnoff Week to Tune In To Kids, the overall goals have remained the same, with the addition of a greater emphasis on increasing media literacy (positive use of media of all kinds, e.g., TV, videos, computer, video games, music, etc.). While getting away from screen media for a few days is a good exercise, parents and kids need resources and strategies to use media in positive, responsible ways all year long. After all, kids and families should live a real life, not a virtual life - it's about balance!
