2010 TUNE IN TO KIDS FAIR
Impacted by Tough Economy

Sponsorships Down - Tune In To Kids cancels 2010 Fair
Reno, NV, February 3, 2010:  Now in its eleventh year, Tune In To Kids is a collaborative initiative of over forty organizations and businesses that sponsor a calendar of family oriented activities designed to encourage positive parent-child interaction and provide tools to help create positive media environments.

The tremendously successful Tune In To Kids Fair has been celebrated for seven consecutive years.  Last year’s Fair attendance drew a crowd of over 10,000.  However, due to the economic downturn, many of the Fair’s major sponsors are unable to commit to this year’s Fair.  The Tune In To Kids Board of Directors determined that the most prudent course of action was to cancel the 2010 Fair.  The organization will continue to promote other mission-driven activities and plans to reinstitute the Fair in 2011.
The Fair, serves families with kids ranging from pre-school through teens and hosts a variety of hands-on activities based on six themes: parent involvement, reading and media literacy, hobbies and recreation, math and science, arts and culture, and health and fitness.

With technology allowing nearly 24-hour media access as children and teens go about their daily lives, the amount of time young people spend with entertainment media has risen dramatically, especially among minority youth (Kaiser Family Foundation, January 21, 2010). Today, 8-18 year-olds devote an average of 7 hours and 38 minutes to using entertainment media during a typical day (more than 53 hours a week), yet only engage in meaningful conversation with their parents for less than 1 hour (38 minutes) per week.

Research has also consistently shown that parent involvement is a critical factor for students’ success and keeping them drug, alcohol, and tobacco free. In the words of Joseph A Califano, Chairman and President of Columbia University’s Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (and former Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare): “Parents are the most potent and underused tool in preventing substance abuse.”

The Tune in to Kids Board of Directors appreciates its many sponsors and community supporters for helping to promote balancing screen time with real life activities.

The Tune In To Kids Fair will be celebrating its seventh year in 2010. The Fair is our biggest event and focuses on our six themes: parent involvement, reading and media literacy, hobbies and recreation, math and science, arts and culture, and health and fitness.

Families across Northern Nevada can engage with their children through real-life activities, and will be provided with tools to create positive media environments at home. Special efforts are made to include the entire community, and there is no admission charge to attend this great non-retail family event.  The Fair drew a crowd of more than 10,000 last year.

Please join us as we continue to encourage families to live a real life, not a virtual life - and bring more balance to their family life.
